Novarka — the Chernobyl sarcophagus

We took part in the electrical works on the New Safe Confinement — a movable shelter enclosing the site of the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The project was financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the resulting structure is the largest movable building in the world

Structure
Largest movable structure in the world
Client
European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
Site
Reactor No. 4, Chernobyl

Scope of works

  • Installation of electrical switchboards
  • Ventilation system — connection of fans
  • Installation and connection of sensors
  • Installation of cable routes
  • Laying and connection of cables

Project objectives

Turning the damaged Reactor No. 4 into an environmentally safe system, slowing corrosion of the existing shelter and reactor building, mitigating the consequences of a potential structural collapse — in particular limiting the release of radioactive dust — and enabling safe demolition of unstable structures

Works were carried out under a radiological regime, with full control of time spent in the zone and dosimetry procedures covering every worker
