Generator synchronisation test rig — "Green Energy"

In 2013–2014 the Maritime University of Szczecin carried out the "Green Energy" research project, creating a laboratory to study the quality of energy produced from renewable sources. We were responsible for a critical part of the system — generator synchronisation and parallel operation

Scope of works

  • Design of the generator synchronisation system
  • A parallel-operation circuit for sources of different types
  • A wide range of operating parameters adjustable by researchers and lab technicians
  • Integration with the laboratory's simulators and measuring instruments

The laboratory, as proposed in the project, is the first of its kind in Poland and one of the few in Europe. Its innovation lies in an unprecedented combination of individual power systems — especially generators — and the study of their mutual effect on the energy produced and transmitted

The test rig was equipped with simulators and measuring devices allowing the parallel operation of different types of generators to be studied, for example the simultaneous operation of diesel generator sets and wind turbines on a single network

Drawing on our experience in power management for ship power plants, we created a synchronisation system offering the research team virtually unlimited scope to adjust operating parameters
